There’s a book coming out. It’s not written yet, but it’ll be a belter. It will have some decent photography, words you’ll want to read, and it will slide snugly into the bigger tiered row of your bookcase where the gift books and knick-knacks live. The title on the spine won’t be intimidated by the other titles nearby and once a year you’ll get the book out to page turn yourself to sleep. This book has presence, mana, and cares more about you than anything attention-injected into your frontal cortex by Google, Meta, Bytedance, or any state-funded, oligarch funded platform that wants your data because data means control and Q4 growth for investors.
It’s all a game – but not the one you want to play
You so desperately want to be in the book game. You want out from the other game. You hate the other game; that it makes you do seriously ****ed up ***t like dumbass video content, inane trends, oversharing, over-consuming, insincere comments, stories without a story, pictures that aren’t pictures, and look at me, look at me pleas to fellow look at me, look at me attention-bidders. This game has driven you mad, sad, angry, resentful, and wanting out knowing you can’t get out. This game has got you trapped; gin-trapped, trapped.
Sophisticated, cunning, seductive, the game knows your fear of being left behind outwills your actual will for freewill; of independent thought, ambition, and need to create for the sake of creating. You want Total Recall, but you don’t want Total Recall. You want the commune, but you can’t stomach the commune. You want independence, but you need the word from your sponsor. You want to be you, but you have to be them. You want to be a socialist, but you’re told to be a capitalist.

Notification. Notification. Notification. My word, it’s horrible. If you enjoy all the above, then perhaps you’re on the wrong website. If you do all or much of the above, but can’t abide doing it yet feel pressured to do so when all the while you want to put that energy into the practice of making pictures, writing, creating music, painting, pottery (I could go on), then hopefully you will feel a sense of comradeship here. This is nice. But to this point is about four minutes of reading time without traffic so you need to be given something helpful. Something that does what it says on the tin/headline:
Simple tips for SEO/AI Search
What we’re about to go into is for anyone who has a website for a creative practice (again, photography, painting etc), but who has not done anything around improving their presence on Google/AI Overviews/AI Mode/ChatGPT/Claude. These are tips you can apply in minutes so long as you know your way around your website platform. If you see some of the headings below and know exactly what to do, then feel free to hang around to check if you really do know what you think you know.
Fix every Title Tag on your top (all your) website pages
Think of olden days when you would type a query into Google and a stack of results would appear below. For example, ‘camera shop Bristol’. Below that would appear web pages that have ‘camera shop Bristol’ in the title tag, and the page linked to would be from a camera shop in Bristol.
The title tag remains an important signal to the search powers that be. Log into your website and write a relevant title tag for each page. Don’t over do it. Avoid any inclination to copy and paste the same words into the title tag section of every page. Make each one unique, relevant to the page, and have variety. For the Bristol camera shop, the homepage title tag might be: Camera shop Bristol | Open Seven Days | Easy Parking.
The website might then have a page about used cameras for sale. The title tag for that page might: Used Cameras For Sale Bristol | Fully Tested & Affordable.
Each platform (WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, Webflow) has a different location for where to add the title tag. For WordPress, you can use a plugin (RankMath is one to check out, Yoast is another). Squarespace, Wix, Webflow are ones where you need to add it in the settings for each page. If in doubt, go to YouTube and find a tutorial.
Time the above will take: If you have a ten page website, and you know where to update the title tag, you can get this done in one hour. Then, leave it and go to the next section.
Fix the heading structure on your website pages
The heading above is an H2. You need these on a page. You also need an H1. This should be the first on your page. So, ‘Your local Bristol camera shop’. Look at the headings on each page (so, the parts which appear above a paragraph) and see that you have one H1 (typically at the top of the page) and then H2s that add to the H1. So, Brands we stock in our camera shop (I take it you get I am using this as an example. Unless you own a camera shop in Bristol, then don’t use that text).
Time the above will take: Like title tags, if you have a ten page website, and you know where to update/add the headings you can get this done in one hour, two at a push, Then, leave it and go to the next section.
What to do next to help your website
From an SEO/AI Search perspective, you could put in around 30-40 hours on a ten page website and still have work to do. The problem is that that is 30-40 hours away from doing the thing you are meant to be doing. And if you put in that 30-40 hours the only reason is to try and do what Google/LLMs want you to do. They will then want more and more as you will learn more and more, and you’ll be in this battle against other websites for citations, mentions, and traditional links, corroding your time, craft, and sanity. And this is before we discuss social; the green room of algorithms to strut, infect, and persecute you. Yes, you.
Perversely, the fix for all of this is to fight the fixation of ticking boxes and focus on being as unique and brilliant as you can be. The less you put into playing the algorithm appearance game, and the more you put into the creation game, the greater likelihood there will be of your work being unique and brilliant. That said, you remain prey for tech giants wanting your attention and time, and they will get it, it’s just how much they get you need to decide right now. You’ve already given too much. The self help podcasts didn’t work. The brick thing to put your phone in didn’t work. Deleting search performance reports didn’t work, and looking at phone consumption never works because its bi-product is shame.
