The Story In My Head

The people I work for aren’t interested in these two. To them, these two are camouflage. Like the ones in front and the ones behind. I shouldn’t be interested in them either. I have a task that requires focus. Execution. And I’ll do it. I always do. But I can still drift a little. Within a dozen steps I look at these two and want everything they have. Into the Underground they’ll go and they won’t even see me. Won’t have a clue what’s in my head. Of the story I’m creating. Of my need to cope. To remember how I used to see the world. Before I entered this life.

“I can’t believe he asked you that!”

“I went sooooo red. I didn’t know what to say.”

“I did warn you he was conservative.”

“Yeah, I didn’t expect to be asked that though.”

“You did very well.”

“He won’t think I’m too lefty for you?”

“Because you’re okay with sex before marriage? Probably. I’m sure you’ll win him over … at his birthday.”

“His birthday!”

“Yeah, you’re invited.”

“He invited me?”

“No, I did. Don’t worry, don’t worry, it’ll be fine. Charlotte will be there.”

“Thank God for that.”

“She’s bringing her new partner too.”

“Christ, she trying to kill him?”

“He’s gotta used to it.”

“To your sister being gay?”

“Yeah … and to us living together.”

“But we’re not living together.”

“I know … but I was thinking we might … if you want.”

IS THAT HIM?

IS IT …

FOCUS … FOCUS …

IT’S HIM. CALL IT IN

“Control, this is position four, over.”

“Position four, respond.”

“Subject one is on the move. He’s approaching my position, over.”

“Hold there, position four, over.”

“He’s at the entrance, over.”

“Maintain your position, over.”

“He’s on the steps. Permission to pursue, over.”

“Maintain your position, over.”

“He’s gone in. Permission to pursue, over.”

“Permission granted. Pursue. Over.”

“Permission noted. I am in pursuit, over.”

This fictional short story was written for a 50 Day Project organised by the artist Amanda Billing. I get 45 minutes to an hour (not the project’s rules, it’s just about the time I have right now) to write a story, sometime between 4.30am and 5.30am. After that, the day is no longer mine.

N.B. The sketch image for this short story was created using AI (at best, I can draw a half-decent stick man). The words are all mine.
